Cloudy with a chance of surprise

When it’s a good day I go to McDonalds and get my version of half sweet tea. The first sip always brings a smile to my face.

Last week I broke my routine in hopes of brightening my day with my favorite drink.

As I turned the corner of the drive-thru I saw something out of the corner of my eye…

it was a McDonalds gift card… under a pile of junk in my car…

most certainly worth zero cents…

I decided to try it anyway.

Handing the card to the cashier, I told her I thought the card was empty and asked if she could try it anyway. She did, and voila, the receipt printed.

Free tea today and enough left over for a free tea the next day! My first sip of drink contained an extra large smile!

There is most certainly something to learn in this.

When something caught my eye, I changed my view and got surprised. (Too often, something will catch my eye and I choose to ignore it.)

So what are some potentially eye catchers that could lead to a surprise?

The flash of a wing in flight over the car…

A splash of water as someone enjoys jumping in a puddle…

The pressure of a head resting itself on your shoulder…

The ding of a text message from someone you haven’t talked to in a long time…

A tentative hello from stranger next to you in the waiting room…

In every one of these scenarios, the choice to engage or not is there. Paying attention to the potential of surprise is there. These small moments could be called unwrapped gifts, don’t you think?

This upbeat tone is difficult today. My day has been filled with anger, self-criticism, and grief.

I’m wondering what unopened gift tried to catch my eye and I chose to miss it. It is really good to take a moment and remember the eye catching unspent gift card.

May we be challenged to let our eyes be caught by the unexpected, engage in it and be open to surprise!
